FAQ

Is there such a thing as a “sugar high”?

We’ve all seen it. You feed a child something sweet, a chocolate bar or piece of cake, and their energy level goes through the roof. It would be easy to blame the sugar in whatever treat they ate, but is it the real culprit behind their behavior?

The short answer is no. Sugar highs are a myth, according to the latest research. A healthy body tightly regulates sugar levels, so highs and lows are rare. If someone suffers from a metabolic disease that leads to sugar peaks and valleys, the result is the exact opposite of the energetic behavior we associate with too many sweets.

You’re seeing the high spirits from being excited to get a treat. Does this mean you can give kids all the Starbursts, Laffy Taffy, Tootsie Pops, and Mr. Goodbars they want? No. Just give the children room to enjoy their candy and experience all the fun it brings them.

What is the best-selling candy in the world?

If you want to find out what’s the most popular candy in the world, it depends on who you’re asking.

Who invented candy?

We’re not sure who first created candy, but we owe them a debt of gratitude; otherwise, we’d be stuck eating pretzels as a treat. That would be no fun. Historians presume that our cave-dwelling ancestors were the first to make candy by drying honey and turning it into a form of taffy. The first recorded candy makers were the ancient Egyptians who mixed figs, dates, and nuts with honey and spices. They offered these confections to their gods and goddesses as part of their worship rituals.

Around the same time, the Greeks used honey to make candied nuts and fruit, while the Romans and Chinese made sweet treats by mixing barley sugar with honey and cooking the mixture in ovens. Where people didn’t have access to honey or sugar cane, they used tree sap to make syrups to sweeten their food.

By 950 AD, access to sugar cane had become widespread worldwide, thanks to trade routes. People in the Middle East built the first sugar refinery and invented caramel. After that, it didn’t take long for candy to become a traditional part of every culture.
