FAQ

Is it OK to drink sparkling water every day?

So far, there’s no scientific evidence that drinking sparkling water every day can harm your health. That isn’t to say there aren’t any potential issues that can occur should you overindulge.

Sparkling water uses carbonic acid to create its bubbles. Any time you introduce acid into your diet, it can lead to an increased chance of tooth decay. It’s still a lower risk than drinking sugary sodas every day, so if your dental health’s a reason for giving up soft drinks and you’re looking for a fizzy replacement, drinking sparkling water is a step in the right direction.

Another concern is your bone health. There’s a possibility that drinking carbonated drinks can lead to bone demineralization and osteoporosis, but there’s no conclusive evidence at this point. If you start drinking a lot of sparkling beverages, you might want to keep an eye on your bone density and an ear open for news on the subject.

Finally, remember you’re drinking a carbonated beverage, and that can lead to issues with gas, in other words, burping, bloating, heartburn, and other less pleasant matters. If your drink includes sucralose, it could compound the problem with diarrhea if you’re sensitive.

On the whole, no major issues come with drinking a can or two of sparkling water per day. Just remember with this, as with everything else, moderation is key. If you have any questions about your diet, take the time to consult with a licensed dietitian.

What is healthier: soda water, sparkling water, seltzer, or mineral water?

Whether you call it club soda, sparkling water, seltzer, or mineral water, these are all forms of carbonated water. The difference lies in how they’re carbonated and what minerals they contain if any.

Club Soda & Seltzer. Seltzer and club soda are both made using plain water that has undergone a chemical process to achieve carbonation. The only difference is that club soda has minerals added to it once it’s carbonated. These minerals give club soda a saltier taste than seltzer, potentially enhancing the flavors of any added juices or liquor.

Mineral Water. Mineral water is still water, meaning it has no carbonation that comes from a source rich in trace minerals. Common minerals include sodium, magnesium, and calcium in varying amounts. The mineral content varies from spring to spring, giving different mineral water brands their unique taste.

Sparkling Water. Mineral water that has been carbonated either naturally or through a chemical process is called sparkling water or sparkling mineral water. Their flavor profiles are determined by the mix of minerals from their source springs.

There really are no added health benefits to drinking mineral water, either still or sparkling over club soda or seltzer. None of these beverages are a source of calories, fat, or sugars, making each of them a great choice to keep you hydrated.

Can you mix alcohol with sparkling water?

The quick answer is yes. Some of the best sparkling waters were developed to add a touch of effervescence to cocktails. Scotch and soda is a prime example. You can also add seltzer to wine for a light summer spritzer. Conversely, you could add some vodka or gin to fruit-flavored sparkling water.

It’s really up to you. There are no rules. Have fun experimenting with the variety of flavors.
